Corrective Gum Recession

Do you have receding gums?

Receding gums is a common dental problem caused by many factors from an overzealous brushing technique to periodontal disease. Receding gums also known as gingival recession, is the exposure of the roots of the teeth caused by a loss of gum tissue and/or retraction of the gingival margin from the crown of the teeth.

Symptoms of receding gums

The exposed root surface known as dentine is not as strong as the crown of the tooth as it is not covered and protected by enamel. This leads to tooth sensitivity and the uncovered areas being more prone to decay. Dentine is also darker then enamel so the margins of the teeth can appear to look stained and dirty.

What can be done

A new procedure is now available. Here at Curtin Dental Dr Niran Pathmaperuma has the solution to restore your gums. Before now the only thing we could do was treat the symptoms but with this new technique we can now repair the damage and restore the gum margin to its original position.

Dr Niran Pathmaperuma is one of 2 dentists in Australia licenced to perform this treatment and has been to America to acquire the skills and equipment necessary to treat gum recession.

Procedure

Chao pinhole surgical technique also known as pinhole gum rejuvenation is a scalpel free, graft free, minimally invasive procedure for correcting gum recession and saving teeth.

Since there is no cutting or stitching patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms.

Through a small hole made by a needle, specially designed instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue and glide it over the receded part of the tooth. The pinholes heal in 24 hours in most cases with long term results. Most patients are back to normal within 24-48 hours post procedure.
